Alyssa J. Brown, MA, LPC, NCC

Owner and Founder of Modern Mental Health

Lead Clinician

Alyssa Brown, MA, LPC, NCC, is a mental health practitioner and founder of Modern Mental Health. Through her practice, she provides individual counseling services for children and adolescents. She obtained a Master of Arts in Counseling from Missouri Baptist University in 2016. Subsequently, she has become licensed as a professional counselor through the state of Missouri and credentialed by the National Board of Certified Counselors. Her previous experience includes over 3,500 hours of supervised counseling, 3 years working as a K-12 certified middle school counselor and 7 years as lead clinician in her own group practice. In addition, she is involved in multiple community service organizations.

Alyssa separates herself from other therapists by limiting her overall number of clients, which allows for an exceptional level of care and attentive approach to therapy for children, adolescents, adults, and their caregivers. Stephanie J. Sooter, PLPC

Therapist Specializing in Trauma and Neurodivergence

Stephanie Sooter is a Provisional Licensed Professional Counselor in Missouri. She earned a Master of Science in Clinical Counseling from Central Methodist University with emphasis on trauma and neurodivergence. Stephanie is currently pursuing a Doctorate of Philosophy in Developmental Psychology.

She has gained valuable experience during her internship hours at Modern Mental Health and for the last year as a PLPC under the direct supervision of Alyssa Brown. Stephanie specializes in trauma-informed care and uses a client-centered approach with emphasis on cognitive behavioral therapy. She has experience working with adults and children. More specifically, those with neurodevelopmental disorders and trauma or anxiety related diagnoses. She has a special passion for working with mothers or neurodivergent children.

Michelle N. Laut, Intern Therapist

Experience with Transitional Counseling for Young Adults and Adolescents

Michelle Laut, MA Ed. is an intern therapist currently pursuing a second Master’s degree in Clinical Counseling at Central Methodist University. She previously earned a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Southeast State University and brings over 15 years of experience within the K–12 public education system, where she worked directly with children and adolescents in various capacities as a certified classroom teacher and coach.

Through her extensive background in education, Michelle has developed a strong understanding of child, adolescent, and young adult development. Her experience allows her to effectively coordinate care, interpret school-related concerns, and support clients and families in navigating academic, behavioral, and social-emotional challenges. She is particularly skilled in collaborating with schools and advocating for students’ needs within educational systems.

Michelle has a strong interest in working with adolescents and young adults, with a focus on transitional counseling as individuals move into adulthood. This includes support related to identity development, emotional regulation, executive functioning, academic or vocational transitions, relationship concerns, and increasing independence. Her approach is informed by Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Exposure-based interventions, and Reality Therapy, with an added interest in couples counseling approaches. 

Michelle is committed to providing thoughtful, developmentally informed care that supports insight, resilience, and meaningful change. She will begin accepting new clients in Summer 2026.
